Fabulous Opportunity – President & Chief Executive Officer

Background

The Brien Center is Berkshire County’s primary provider of behavioral health services, with a dedicated and compassionate staff of over 400 individuals located in 26 locations throughout the county. This $30m+ system of care serves close to 10,000 individuals annually, including children, adolescents, families, and adults, many of whom whose lives have been saved, successfully treated, and who continue to be successful residents of our communities. Brien’s current CEO, Christine Macbeth, has served this wonderful organization so well for almost 14 years, and will be retiring in the next few months. This presents a terrific opportunity for the next CEO to build on what Ms. Macbeth, the Board, and her talented staff have put in place.

The Brien Center (TBC) is proud of their comprehensive mental health and substance use disorder programs and services for highly complex problems, and they continue to hear from clients, often years later, that their lives and families remain intact because of the care family members have received.

The Brien Center’s history of providing care in this region dates back more than 100 years…contributing to the emotional  health of area citizens for an entire century through its comprehensive array of services…a truly remarkable accomplishment!

TBC prides itself as having a highly committed Board of Directors to whom the CEO reports; a Board whose energy, entrepreneurialism, diversity, and commitment to quality are truly exemplary. And The Brien’s Center’s dedicated staff continues to provide excellent care within a philosophical framework of “recovery” and a commitment to serving its clients in a comprehensive fashion. It is often recognized as an organization that is “on the cutting edge” in its provision of the highest quality healthcare services, is the largest comprehensive systems in Berkshire County, and is typically seen as a model system that often changes the landscape of how “best practices” can be delivered. TBC is licensed  by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health as an outpatient mental health and substance addiction treatment clinic, demonstrating Brien’s commitment to quality, transparency, and client satisfaction.

The Position

The President/CEO has ultimate responsibility for ensuring Brien’s entire delivery system is implemented with an emphasis on its transdisciplinary integrated practices and services.

The Brien Center is looking to find a strong and innovative healthcare leader to build upon the wonderful foundation built by its Board, Leadership Team, and entire staff…with an ongoing commitment to its mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities, working with state and local officials, community leaders, funders, and community partners in the further development and implementation of its service offerings.

With this in mind, our “ideal candidate” will:

  • Have had successful experience in working for a Board of Directors; non-profit community based behavioral health settings preferred.
  • Have demonstrated success at leading, managing, developing, and directing well-functioning teams.
  • Have a real comfort level being the “face” of an organization…connecting with our communities as well as state and federal officials.
  • Have a history of success as a collaborator/partner with external organizations & systems, including a successful history of working as a community leader in partnership with businesses and elected officials.
  • Have successful political/advocacy experience at a local, regional, and state level.
  • Experience living/working in a rural community.
  • Demonstrate a real “passion” for serving individuals such as those served by Brien, with special emphasis on individuals and families with complex needs and those experiencing health inequities.
  • Have a solid understanding of anticipated changes in the “marketplace,” at both a State and Federal level.
  • Have experience in effectively managing change within organizations.
  • Demonstrate experience directly working with or directly supporting the Recovery Community and people with lived experience and a commitment to Recovery, a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.
  • Demonstrate successful efforts in building a diverse, inclusive workplace culture with a commitment to the organization’s intercultural competency to serve its current and future clients and staff.
  • Demonstrate actions of inclusive leadership by understanding the various generations within the workplace.
  • Demonstrate belief and actions that place employee health, well-being, growth, and development as top priorities.
  • Be considered a person with a high degree of integrity and an ethical “compass”.
  • Exemplify solid Emotional Intelligence, inclusive of being flexible & adaptable, having excellent problem solving & decision-making skills, being an excellent relationship builder, and effectiveness even under stressful and difficult circumstances; functioning with great confidence and humility; kind and compassionate at his/her core.
  • Have a track record of fund raising and the development of new funding sources.
  • Be a leader whose management & leadership style includes effective collaboration, delegation, results driven, being both a motivator and one who inspires others, being an effective communicator, possessing a sense of humor.
  • Have had leadership experiences that may include operations, finance, quality and risk management, and human resources, within a complex behavioral healthcare/human services setting; preferably experience in a behavioral health, CMHC/CCBHC setting.
  • Have strong financial acumen.
  • Have demonstrated a track record for innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, and be someone often considered a “visionary”.
  • Demonstrate data-driven decision making and use of data analytics in the management of organizations; technologically adept.
  • Possess successful merger/acquisition experience.
  • Prior success in the development of systems & processes in the recruitment & retention of employees.
  • Have experience in a unionized setting is desired, but not required.

With rolling hills divided by wide valleys and historic towns scattered throughout the region, the Berkshires is a both a geographic region and a cultural center—a bucolic haven with a sophisticated take on the arts and a serious commitment to culinary excellence! Whether it is dining, shopping, cultural attractions or outdoor activities, Berkshire County attracts people from all over the world.
